In 1882 Lawrence, Kansas three Black men were killed on the Kansas River bridge. An angry lynch mob believed they were justified in taking things into their own hands. They were certain the three were responsible for the death of one of their own.

When Kings Reigned

Documentary Film

Five years after the war ends, Jake Washington appears on the scene, building a cabin just below the dam on the river. His presence helps to rebuild commerce in the area, provide assistance during floods, and retrieve/rescue drowning victims until he, Abe Burns, and other men like them are caught in a trap of changing game laws that suddenly make them criminals.

Museum

The Kansas Riverkings Museum

The Kansas Riverkings Museum is a collection of artifacts, images, and stories of a group of great rivermen who used the Kansas River to make their living (1870-1970) They were boat builders, net weavers, hunters, and trappers.

Our museum exhibit is static and mobile. There is a small display currently viewable at the Eudora Kansas Museum of History. Contact us about ways to bring the exhibition to your event location.

When Kings Reigned Available on Google Books. This small book tells the story of great Kansas rivermen who lived off the Kaw River as commercial fishermen beginning as early as 1870. The earliest of them fought the state of Kansas for their own livelihood, ultimately losing in the end and forcing them to work in the shadows.
